The Carrot Ranch Literary Community Flash Fiction Challenge for January 21, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a 2 a.m. story. Crazy things can happen after the bars close down, even if you never go to the bar! You might, drown in a pile of snow or wake up to find a black bear in your kitchen. Well, those are northern Idaho 2 a.m. stories. What’s yours?
Brittany’s eyes open wide peering into the blackness. Seeing nothing, she looks toward the digital clock. It’s 2 a.m. What woke her? Why is it so cold? Then, Brittany hears the creak of the rocking chair next to the bed. She freezes. “Whose there?” she asks. The rocking chair keeps rocking and creaking. A stair moans as if under tremendous weight in the hallway outside her room. The rocking chair rocks to a steady rhythm. She hears a step in the hallway, a heavy step. A big man, she thinks. Then, the rocking chair ceases to move and sound.
